The Different Types of Magic Mushrooms

The Different Types of Magic Mushrooms

There are more than 180 different types of shrooms, and each one has its level of potency. They all grow in other parts of the world and have distinct features. They all usually have one of the three following chemical compounds: psilocybin, psilocin, and baeocystin. These compounds give them their psychedelic nature. Despite there being so many magic mushrooms on our planet, not all are suitable for human consumption. They have different potency levels, which you need to know, and you can measure by examining three components.

To determine the level of psychedelic potency of a shroom, you need to determine which chemical compound it contains. As discussed earlier, these are psilocybin, psilocin, and baeocystin. Psilocybin and psilocin are closely related. Consuming psilocybin creates psilocin as a byproduct, which gives you the psychedelic effect. Baeocystin behaves the same way. The potency of a particular shroom depends on how many of these chemical compounds make them up. All three would produce a substantial and unsafe psychedelic effect.

The colour of a magic mushroom’s spores can give you an idea of the type of chemical compound in the mushrooms. For example, a spore print with a brownish-purple to rusty-brown colour contains psilocybin, while a blue or almost blackish spore is psilocin.

So, there are many different types of magic mushrooms, and if you still feel lost, do not worry. We included a guide below of the most common types of shrooms.

Psilocybe Cubensis

  • Psilocybe Cubensis or Golden Caps

Golden Caps are the most popular types of shrooms sold in dispensaries. It is incredibly hardy and can survive through different seasons. They most often grow on top of some kind of manure. Their shape changes as they age. Younger shrooms appear more bell-shaped and have a cinnamon-brown colour before they turn into the iconic golden cap.

Psilocybe azurescens

  • Psilocybe azurescens or Flying Saucer

This magic mushroom is commonly found in woodland areas. Wherever there is sandy soil, this shroom will thrive. Its brown or caramel colour is recognizable with a conic shape on the top of its cap. If you purchase spores to grow, they should have a purple-brown or purple-black colour.

  • Psilocybe Tampanensis

This shroom is as wild as they come, and that is where it is usually found. It has a comprehensive and convex-shaped cap. It starts brown, but as it ages, it turns white-grayish. If you buy some spores to grow, you should expect them to be purplish-brown.

  • Psilocybe Stuntzii or Blue Rangers

These grow on soil rich in wood, new lawns, paths, and gardens. They also usually grow in clusters. They are olive-green while young and turn yellow-brown as they grow. If you buy some spores, they should appear purple or grayish-brown.

  • Psilocybe Caerulescens or Derrumbes, Landslide Mushrooms

These magic shrooms grow in low temperatures and high altitudes. They are called landslide mushrooms because they grow well in areas where there are frequent landslides. They have a sliver-blue colour and metallic feel to them. They have a low potency, which makes them a great introduction to the psychedelic high from shrooms.

  • Psilocybe Cyanscens or Wavy Caps

That is a classic magic mushroom you will find growing with a lot of rotten wood or sawdust. It grows on lawns, gardens, or out on a hike. They are called wavy caps because their caps have a wavy structure. They are chestnut brown colour when young and turn dark yellow when they age and dry out.

  • Psilocybe Mexicana or Pajaritos

This magic mushroom strain is one of the oldest shrooms in the book, and some say the Aztecs used it during their ceremonies. It grows in meadows, moss, and deciduous forests. Where there is fertile soil, this mushroom will grow.

  • Psilocybe Bohemia or The Bohemian

This shroom is picky when it comes to choosing where it wants to grow. It likes Alnus, Picease, and Betula trees. It will grow on the debris or fall wood from these trees. Its cap is conical when it is young, then convex as it grows. It is dark brown with a lighter colour on the outside. If you buy spores, they should be gray and purple with a faint brown tinge.

  • Psilocybe Caerulipes or the Blue Foot

These are the rarest magic mushroom you can find. They are known to grow on the same spot for years. This is because they like to produce new hardwood debris. They are called the Blue Foot because they have a blue colour near the base of their steam.
